Pocheon-si, South Korea — Seven individuals were reportedly hurt when a South Korean fighter jet unintentionally dropped eight bombs on a civilian area while having an air force training.
The KF-16 fighter jet’s unusually discharged MK-82 bombs fell outside of a firing range, resulting in unknown civilian harm, the air force stated in a statement.
The air force announced that it will form a commission to look into the accident’s cause and the extent of the harm to civilians.
The fighter plane was reportedly participating in joint live-firing exercises between the air force and the army.
According to some reports, five civilians and two soldiers were injured in the accident, and that seven buildings were damaged and that the conditions of two of the injured were serious but not life-threatening.
The air force statement did not specify the location of the incident, but South Korean media reported that it happened in Pocheon, a city near the North Korean border.
Along with expressing regret for harming civilians, the air force also wished for the injured to recover quickly and promised to take all necessary measures to provide compensation and other support to victims.
