8 Dead, Thousands Displaced as Monsoon, Butchoy, and Carina Wreak Havoc

MANILA — The death toll due to the combined impacts of the southwest monsoon, Tropical Depression Butchoy, and Typhoon Carina has risen to eight, as per the latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released on Tuesday.

The NDRRMC’s situation report also indicated that two individuals sustained injuries, and one person is currently missing.

The adverse weather conditions have affected a total of 179,744 families, equating to 866,483 individuals across various regions of the country. Out of these, 7,738 families or 33,645 people have sought refuge in 56 evacuation centers.

The report further detailed that 67 houses were partially damaged, while 69 houses were completely destroyed.

The three weather disturbances have resulted in agricultural losses amounting to P8,745,923.23, impacting 748 farmers and fisherfolk. Infrastructure damage has reached P700,000.

As of Tuesday, seven roads and one bridge remain impassable, and one airport along with three seaports are not operational.

By 5 p.m. Tuesday, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 was still in effect in Batanes, while Signal No. 1 was in place over Cagayan, parts of Isabela, parts of Apayao, and parts of Ilocos Norte. Carina is projected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday.
