Manila, Philippines — The Malacañang on Tuesday confirmed that Vice President Sara Duterte has been granted travel authority to Japan from August 19 to 24, 2026.
Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez noted that this is a personal trip and that no fund from the government is used.
Following this, Duterte issued a statement clarifying that her plans has since changed and that the trip has been cancelled—adding that the updated travel information has been forwarded to the Office of the President.
In relation to this, Duterte reminded media organizations that reported about her supposed Japan tip to verify the information first before publishing, and encouraged them to reach out to her office for confirmation.
She also reminded the OP that disclosure of her travel schedule is a risk to her security.
In a subsequent statement, Duterte asked the OP to not single out her office, and demand transparency and accountability from all the offices and government officials.
Duterte encouraged the OP to publicize the travel authorities and expenses of all government officials, and if public funds were used.
On Malacañang’s end, it clarified that the information about the travel authority granted to Duterte did not come from them.
Palace Press Officer at Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro defended that someone has reported the matter and that they only confirmed it.
On Duterte’s appeal for the public disclosure of the officials’ travel authorities and expenses.
She added that the Palace is open in giving information and confirmation regarding this matter.
