President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has shifted the commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day from its original date of August 21 to August 23, 2024, as per an announcement from the Presidential Communications Office on Thursday.
This change is formalized under Proclamation No. 665, which was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on August 15. The proclamation designates August 23 as a special (non-working) day.
Ninoy Aquino Day, traditionally observed on August 21, has been rescheduled to align with Friday, “to allow for an extended weekend, thereby boosting domestic tourism,” the proclamation stated.
The celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day is mandated by Republic Act No. 9492, signed into law by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2007. The law permits the holiday to be observed on the Monday closest to August 21 unless a different date is set by law or proclamation.
