TIirana, Albania — Following concerns raised over potential risks of violence and bullying in the app, the Albanian government shuts down Tiktok app for a year.
In a decision on Thursday, the Albanian Cabinet issued a mandate to shut down Tiktok in the country for 12 months due to the violence it instills to users, especially among children.
With over 1,300 meetings with some 65,000 parents, the authorities decided to adopt their recommendation to shut down or limit the Tiktok platform.
This comes after last year’s incident of a teen stabbed by another teenager to death after a quarrel that started on Tiktok.
Tiktok have rejected the alleged involvement of the app in the incident, saying that there was no evidence saying that the victim and the perpetrator had the app installed.
Officials are now in contact with Tiktok to discuss installation of filters like parental control, age verification, and inclusion of Albanian language in the application.
