Queensland, Australia — 2025 outbreak of a tropical disease in Australia kills 31 individuals so far, says state’s health department.
Based on the latest data from Queensland health bureau, the latest fatality of the disease—linked with heavy rainfall and flooding—was reported last week, along with four new cases in Northern Australia.
Melioidosis is a rare tropical disease, initially a soil-borne disease.
The disease spread through contact with bacteria found in soil and groundwater common in Northern Australia and Southeast Asia.
After heavy rainfall, the bacteria can become airborne.
It can be noted that in February, record-breaking rains and widespread flooding hit Townsville, Cairns, and its surrounding areas.
During the past week, one case was reported in Townsville and three in Cairns City, bringing the total number of reported cases this year to 221.
Amidst this, Townsville public health director noted that reports of new cases have significantly died down recently following the change in weather, eventually leading to the end of this year’s outbreak.
