The Australian state of Victoria moves to legalize working from home for workers of both the private and public sectors.
Australian Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan conveyed her plans on Saturday (August 2, 2025) during the Labor’s state conference.
If passed into law, this will enable workers with jobs that can be “reasonably” done at home to have a work from home setup for at least two days a week.
“We’re doing that because we know what the evidence tells us — workers are more productive, it saves time for families, it saves money for families,” Allan said in her speech.
Based on their projections, it could save families up to $110 per week, relieve traffic congestion, and keep more women in the workforce.
The plan will go through consultations with workers, employers, and other related unions.
It is to be introduced by the state Labor government to the parliament by next year.
“This isn’t about whether the work gets done, it gets done. This is about power. It’s about who gets to call the shots and who gets pushed around,” the premier added. –Isa Estrellado, Contributor
