BANGLADESH GARMENT FACTORY FIRE KILLS AT LEAST 16

Dhaka, Bangladesh – A huge fire ripped through a four-story garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing at least 16 people.

According to Reuters, fire officials say the blaze started around noon on the third floor of the building.

It quickly spread to a nearby chemical storage area filled with plastic materials and industrial chemicals, making the fire harder to contain and toxic gas released.

The flames burned for almost three hours before firefighters managed to bring them under control.

Initial investigation revealed that the factory had no safety clearance and lacked emergency exits, which trapped the victims.

They were then burned beyond recognition, saying DNA testing will be needed to identify them.

It can be recalled that Bangladesh has faced repeated industrial disasters over the years, mostly due to poor fire and building safety standards, such as back in 2012 that killed 100 workers.

Going back, search and recovery operations continue in the debris of the factory.
