BILL FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS OF LGU’S FILED IN HIGHER CHAMBER

MANILA PHILIPPINES – Senator Sherwin Gatchalian wants local government units to strengthen their disaster preparedness programs to help sustain economic development in their communities.

Senate Bill No. 939 or Act Expanding The Application Of The Local Disaster Risk Reduction And Management Fund, filed by Gatchalian, seeks to amend Republic Act 10121 or The Philippine Disaster
Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.

According to Gatchalian, its enactment will give LGUs more ability to implement projects that will strengthen in their disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and rehabilitation capabilities.

Meanwhile, the senator is scheduled to visit and distribute aid to those who were burned by Typhoon Carina in Cavite City today.

“Any form of disaster, whether natural or not, slows down economic development in any area
therefore it is necessary for the LGUs to strengthen their capacity to prepare for any disaster,” said Gatchalian,

The senator lamented the fire incident that should have been preventable.

It mentions the fires in Barangay 5 and Barangay 7 of the said city which caused the evacuation of 718 families.

Aid is also set to go to the victims of Typhoon Carina where the affected families reached 1,309.
