The City of Carson kicked off Filipino American History Month by presenting Apl.de.ap, a founding member of the Black Eyed Peas, with a ceremonial key to the city.
The City Council recognized Apl.de.ap for his contributions as both a world-renowned musician and philanthropist, acknowledging him and the Black Eyed Peas as role models, particularly for the Filipino community, which comprises about 20% of Carson’s 100,000 residents.
“I’m very proud and honored. Apl.de.ap is a voice for the Filipino community, and he brings everyone together to celebrate,” said Carson City Council member Arleen Bocatija Ros.
Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes emphasized the importance of the group’s connection to the community: “This is a true example of people doing something right.
This group has touched this community. They’re homegrown, they come home, and they give back. That is very important.”
In June, Apl served as the grand marshal for the city’s annual Philippine Independence Day Celebration, one of the largest Kalayaan festivals in the area.
His presence continues to make an impact in Carson, a city with deep ties to the Filipino community.
“Apl.de.ap is one of the gems of our community.
He provides services free of charge, entertains, and showcases our culture,” said Alex Cainglet, chairman of Carson Parks and Recreation.
The Pampanga-born artist shared that this is the second time he’s been given the keys to a city, with the first being in Manila.
Carson holds special meaning for him as it was a place where he and his bandmates would breakdance and practice during their early years.
“Carson was one of the spots we used to break dance and practice, house parties, and malls—that’s why it’s very special,” Apl said.
He also announced plans to return to Carson on October 12 for a car show and adobo cook-off as part of the Filipino American History Month celebrations.
“Happy Filipino American History Month, and this is the best place to start the first day.
I can’t wait to share some of the projects from the Apl.de.ap Foundation that we’ve been working on, from the Philippines to here,” he added.
With Apl receiving the ceremonial key, Carson has officially kicked off Filipino American History Month. For the rest of October, the city will be filled with festivities celebrating Filipino culture and pride.
