Former Agriculture Minister and Rural Affairs Official Tang Renjian sentenced to death with two-year reprieve related to alleged bribery and corruption in China.
Tang was found to have received cash and bribes, including assets valued at more than 268 million yuan (approximately P2.19 billion), from 2007 to 2024, depending on the exact exchange rate used.
According to the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court, Tang Renjian’s death sentence was suspended for two years after he admitted to his crimes.
In November 2024, Tang was expelled from the Chinese Communist Party, six months after undergoing an anti-corruption investigation and being removed from his position.
Tang was the former governor of the northwestern province of Gansu, he also served as vice chairman of the southern autonomous region of Guangxi, China.
This case is similar to former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, where Li was removed from his position after seven months, and was also expelled from the Chinese Communist Party due to violations, including suspected bribery.
A “death with reprieve” sentence is a death penalty that is not immediately carried out, usually with a two-year suspension of the execution.
The sentence can be reduced to life imprisonment if no laws are broken during the reprieve period.—Grachella Corazon, Eurotv News
