China Vows to ‘Crush’ Foreign Intrusions in South China Sea: Military Official

BEIJING — China will “crush” any foreign attempts to infringe upon its territorial sovereignty, including in the South China Sea, a senior Chinese military official stated on Thursday during a defense forum.

The comments come amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing, with both nations exchanging verbal blows over China’s assertive stance in disputed maritime areas, particularly the South China Sea.

In recent months, Chinese vessels have been involved in high-profile confrontations with Philippine ships in waters that China claims almost entirely, despite a ruling from an international court declaring those claims legally unfounded.

Speaking to a small group of journalists, Chinese army Lieutenant General He Lei said, “We hope that the South China Sea will remain a sea of peace.”

However, he warned, “If the United States pushes countries to the front line or becomes directly involved, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will not be patient.” He added that China would “resolutely crush” any foreign efforts to encroach on its territorial and maritime rights.

On Wednesday, China and the Philippines engaged in “candid” discussions regarding South China Sea disputes, particularly over a contested reef that has been the site of recent clashes.

China and the U.S. have also continued discussions on the matter, with Lieutenant General He stating that a resolution “depends on the United States.”

Scores of delegates from over 90 countries are currently in Beijing for the Xiangshan forum, China’s answer to Singapore’s “Shangri-La” Dialogue. Official speeches are set for Friday, with representatives from countries including Russia, Pakistan, and Germany participating in roundtable discussions.
