Manila, Philippines – The Commission on Audit (COA) has directed its Performance Audit Office (PAO) to strictly review flood control projects amid the persistent flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
COA Chairperson Gamaliel A. Cordoba said the immediate performance audit was mandated under COA Resolution No. 2024-018, which took effect on December 16, 2024.
The resolution covers the Performance Audit Portfolio (PAP), which includes 30 programs and projects. One of its main areas is the Flood Risk Management and Resiliency Program, which encompasses flood control initiatives.
The audit aims to determine whether government-funded flood control projects have effectively reduced flooding, especially since billions of pesos have been allocated by the government for this purpose.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the need to ensure that public funds are spent properly and that government projects deliver good results, stressing that audits must focus on major issues and align with national priorities.—Dan Dojillo, Contributor
