Manila Philippines – The Department of Education (DEPED) has reported that 90 schools was damaged by the Super Typhoon Carina, and enhanced Southwest Monsoon.
DEPED said an estimated cost of P630 million is needed for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged schools.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara said that some schools need to postponed its openings due to the rehabilitation and reconstruction, but those schools which suffers minimal damages will open on July 29.
“Some schools will really have to postpone their openings kasi maraming aayusin at lilinisin. Pero yung wala o minimal ang damages itutuloy pa rin ang pasukan,” Angarra said in a statement.
Angara is expected to release the lists of schools that will postponed its opening, as the regional directors of DEPED need to assess the readiness for school opening.
“I’ll be issuing a list tomorrow kung saan postponed ang pasukan and the regional directors will also work with the principals to assess readiness for school opening,” Angara added.
The Teachers Dignity Coalition recommends the postponement of school opening amid the declaration of a state of calamity in Metro Manila and other affected areas.
DEPED announced the schedule of opening of SY 2024-2025 on July 29.
