Manila Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) denounced the illegal and aggressive actions of Chinese personnel against Philippine Navy troops who are conducting a re-supply mission in the Ayungin Shoal.
In a statement, the DFA said they are concerned about China’s aggressive actions that caused injuries to almost 10 military personnel.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs expresses grave concern over the incident that occurred in the Ayungin Shoal during a humanitarian mission to BRP Sierra Madre on 17 June 2024. The DFA denounces the illegal and aggressive actions of Chinese authorities that resulted in personnel injury and vessel damage ,” according to the DFA statement.
Yesterday, the National Security Council (NSC) confirmed that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) joined forces for the re-supply mission to deliver humanitarian aids to the troops stationed at BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.
The June 17 incident happened during the regular Rore mission of the military personnel.
However said, the Philippines will remain its effort to rebuild the conducive negotiations and consultations between China and the Philippines in regards to dispute in the South China Sea.
“… the Department has been exerting efforts to rebuild a conducive environment for dialogue and consultation with China on the South China Sea,” explained the DFA.
The DFA also expects China act sincerely, responsible and refrain these types of actions that imposed danger to military personnel and vessels.
The Department also calls on China to comply with international law, particularly UNCLOS or the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 Arbitral Ruling.
At the same time, the DFA filed another diplomatic protest against China.
From January to June 18, 2024, thirty protests have been filed by the Philippines, while under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. there are about 163 protest filed against China’s illegal activities inside the country’s exclusive economic zones.
