DFA: ‘FILIPINOS ARE SAFE’ FOLLOWING 6.7 MAGNITUDE QUAKE JOLTS PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Manila, Philippines – Filipinos in Lae City in Papua New Guinea’s Morobe province are safe after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake jolted the largest city.

In a statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Embassy in Port Moresby, the Filipino community in Lae City is safe. 

No damage was reported in the city, where the earthquake struck. 

However, the DFA continues to monitor the situation of Filipinos there in coordination with the embassy. 

There are 36,000 Filipinos based in Papua New Guinea. 

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded 26 kilometers from Lae City, which has a population of over 76,000. 

The tremor was also felt in Port Moresby, where tremors of magnitude 5 were recorded. 

However, no damage was reported in the cities of Papua New Guinea. 

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of the country in March last year.
