DILG LAUNCHES ‘SAFER METRO MANILA PLAN; AUTHORITIES TO INCREASE POLICE PRESENCE IN SCHOOLS AND URBAN AREAS

Manila, Philippines – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will begin the pilot testing of “Safer Metro Manila Plan” this month, which aims to strengthen police presence in public places, especially in urban areas.

According to the DILG, this move is part of their initiative to ensure public safety.

They also aim to restore Filipinos’ sense of security so they can go anywhere without fear or hesitation.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that the plan will prioritize increasing the deployment of police officers and force multipliers in schools, particularly during school hours.

Meanwhile, PBGEN Ponce Rogelio Ibasco Peñones Jr. said that the program will initially be implemented across Metro Manila to establish strategies and plans in coordination with local government units.

In addition, the PNP will set up Police Assistance Desks in front of schools, which students can turn to in times of need.

Authorities will also focus on increasing police visibility, along with volunteer groups and barangay watchmen, in areas such as PITX and LRT stations, especially in Pasay, Rotonda, Monumento, and Cubao.

There will also be additional deployment in areas with high numbers of tourists, such as BGC, Pasay, Malate, and Parañaque.

Secretary Remulla emphasized that through the Safer Metro Manila Plan, they expect to reduce crime rates across the country, especially in urban areas where the highest number of incidents are recorded.

Meanwhile, after the implementation of the program in the National Capital Region, the program will next be rolled out in Cebu, Baguio, Bacolod, and other major urban centers.
