Quezon City, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), along with other government agencies, is closely monitoring campaign activities to prevent the exploitation of the poor and vulnerable for political gain, Secretary Rex Gatchalian said in a harsh warning to politicians and candidates.
Following reports of campaign events where underrepresented groups—such as single parents, the elderly, and people with disabilities—were either used as political props or the target of offensive jokes, Secretary Gatchalian made these remarks.
In a TV interview, Gatchalian said, “This isn’t a reminder; it’s a warning,” highlighting how such acts are prohibited by DSWD policies and Commission on Elections (Comelec) regulations. “We’re observing.”
The practice of using vulnerable populations as “punchlines” or political campaign tools was denounced by the head of the DSWD. He declared, “The elderly, the poor, and the disabled are not campaign props.” “Let’s stop going there.”
Gatchalian reaffirmed that during the election season, the DSWD will act as a watchful guard, protecting these sectors from mistreatment and exploitation. Additionally, he promised that the organization would offer those impacted by such political wrongdoing the financial support, psychosocial interventions, and legal aid they require.
Additionally, he clarified that the ongoing election campaigns are being watched and monitored by other agencies, including the Office of the President, the Department of the Interior, and local governments.
The DSWD’s resolute position demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of its most vulnerable citizens during election season.
