The prosecutor general of Timor Leste has placed former lawmaker Arnie Teves under house arrest, according to the Department of Justice.
“The Prosecutor General’s Office of Timor-Leste has officially placed former House Representative Arnie Teves under house arrest.” stated in the statement of DOJ.
Based on a statement released by DOJ official Undersecretary Raul Vasquez, authorities in Timor Leste have re-arrested Teves or placed him under house arrest.
Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, legal counsel for Teves, stated that the court’s decision yesterday placed the former lawmaker under house arrest.
Reports indicate that Teves can only go outside if he attends the hearings.
“Actually, kahapon po iginawad yung desisyon ng korte (the court yesterday issued the decision that) he should be placed under house arrest,” Atty. Topacio said.
According to the DOJ, the Policia Nacional de Timor Leste (PNTL) will supervise Teves, and only his family is permitted to visit him.
“He will be under 24-hour security, with only family members permitted to visit him.”
The DOJ also mentioned that the Philippine government will ensure proper coordination with Timor Leste to ensure all initiatives are correct and appropriate.
“The government will maintain close oversight of the situation to ensure that all procedures are both valid and appropriate.” said on the statement.
