An Israeli airstrike on Sunday killed at least eight Palestinians, mostly children, as they gathered to collect water in central Gaza, according to a report from Reuters.
The missile, which the Israeli military said was aimed at an Islamic Jihad militant, malfunctioned and struck a water distribution point in the Nuseirat refugee camp.
According to Ahmed Abu Saifan, an emergency physician at Al-Awda Hospital through Reuters, the strike hit civilians who had gathered to fill containers due to severe water shortages.
Six children were among the dead and 17 others were wounded.
The Israeli military regretted the harm toward the uninvolved civilians, adding that the incident is under review.
However, hours after the incident, Palestinian media reported that 12 more people were killed in an Israeli strike on a market in Gaza City.
Over 58,000 people have been killed since the conflict between Israel and Gaza began in October 2023, Gaza Health Ministry said.
