Gerald Anderson Awarded PCG Auxiliary Search and Rescue Medal for Typhoon ‘Carina’ Efforts

MANILA — Actor Gerald Anderson was honored by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) with the PCG Auxiliary Search and Rescue Medal and Ribbon during a ceremony held on Thursday, August 8. PCG Commandant CG Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan presented the award to Anderson, who serves as an auxiliary commander, for his heroic efforts during Super Typhoon Carina in the National Capital Region.

The award recognized Anderson’s bravery in assisting with rescue operations amid the severe flooding and devastation caused by the typhoon. Expressing his gratitude, Anderson dedicated the recognition to everyone involved in the rescue efforts.

“Thankful ako sa Coast Guard na they recognized yung efforts ko, but I share this award with other rescuers, sa other volunteers, lahat ng nag-donate para makatulong din sa iba,” Anderson said in an interview on Thursday. “What thing I said na sana my actions na nakita sa Facebook will inspire others to also help.”

While acknowledging the risks involved, Anderson credited his water search and rescue (WASAR) training for enabling him to contribute effectively. “Not necessarily kailangan nila gawin yun, ako kasi bata pa lang nag-swimming na ako. I’ve undergone WASAR training—water search and rescue—it’s not something I’m encouraging people to do, but there’s always different ways [to help],” he said.

Anderson also shared his plans to create a dedicated search and rescue team in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard. The team, which will include other celebrities willing to participate, aims to be on standby for future calamities.

“Maganda dun sa nangyari, gusto ko talaga magbuo ng search and rescue team na who will be ready anytime. Kasama yung ibang celebrity friends who are also willing. Because of what happened, na-encourage sila maging part ng squadron namin,” Anderson explained. “I’m talking with the Coast Guard, meron kaming gagawin na mas permanent na situation for a search and rescue team.”

The PCG commended Anderson not only for his courage but also for his commitment to public service, expressing hope that his actions will inspire others to join similar initiatives.
