Hundreds Evacuate in Malabon Due to Flooding from Tropical Storm Kristine

MANILA — Hundreds of families were evacuated from Malabon City on Thursday as flooding, caused by severe tropical storm Kristine, affected several areas.

According to data from the Malabon City Central Command and Communication Center, 145 families, or a total of 588 individuals, sought temporary shelter in various public schools as the storm continued to impact Metro Manila.

Most of the evacuees were housed at Longos Elementary School.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said the combination of heavy rainfall from the storm and high tide worsened the flooding in six barangays, including Ibaba, San Agustin, Catmon, Tañong, Tonsuya, and Santulan.

“Nakakabigla nga kasi nung umaga okay lang siya, kinagabihan anlakas ng ulan, nasabayan pa ng hightide… Minomonitor pa rin namin kung puwede na silang pabalikin sa kanilang mga tahanan. Inaantay pa namin yung bulletin ng Pagasa,” Sandoval said.

MARIKINA CITY

In Marikina City, authorities are closely monitoring the Marikina River as intermittent light to moderate rain continues.

As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the water level in the river had risen above 14 meters.

Dave David, head of the Marikina Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, stated that residents would be evacuated if the water level increased further. Currently, five families are staying at H. Bautista Elementary School in Concepcion Uno, while most other evacuation centers remain unoccupied.

Meanwhile, 124 bus trips were canceled at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) on Thursday due to the storm’s impact. Most of the affected trips were headed to the Bicol Region.
