Kyiv marked an official day of mourning on Friday (August 1, 2025), a day after a Russian missile and drone attack killed 31 people and injured more than 150 on Thursday, officials said.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the youngest victim was 2 years old, from the recorded five children fatalities as well as 16 injuries.
According to Associated Press, it was the highest number of child casualties in a single attack on the Ukrainian capital since aerial strikes began in October 2022, and the deadliest attack on the city since July last year, when 33 people were killed.
Consequently, a large part of a nine-story residential building was also destroyed, and over 100 other buildings were damaged, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities, and universities.
Despite calls from Western leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have intensified in recent months, forcing a continued slow war of attrition with high casualties on both sides.
