Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., on Monday, departed from Villamor Airbase for his five-day state visit to the Republic of India, following an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his pre-departure speech, the president acknowledged the long-standing friendship between the Philippines and India that dates back to the pre-colonial era.
The two countries have seen significant growth in bilateral relations, which is reflected in diplomatic engagements, economic growth, deepening cultural ties, among others.
In the field of defense and security, Marcos emphasized the desire to further deepen maritime cooperation between New Delhi and Manila.
This includes the two countries’ shared vision for upholding international maritime law, including the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS) and amid the continuing illegal presence of the Chinese Ships in the West Philippine Sea.
Last week, Indian Naval ships arrived in the country to participate in the first-ever bilateral exercises in Southeast Asia. The President’s state visit coincides with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and India. –Alvin Pelobello, Eurotv News
