MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged local government units (LGUs) on Friday to enhance their waste management strategies in response to an increase in leptospirosis and dengue cases.
Marcos delivered his remarks to around 3,000 local chief executives during the Local Governance Summit 2024 held in Pasay City.
“Currently, we are experiencing a surge in leptospirosis and dengue cases, attributed by the DOH to improper garbage disposal and poor waste management,” Marcos stated in his speech.
He emphasized that “Local chief executives must work harder to utilize environmentally-sound methods and waste minimization measures to protect public health and, of course, our environment.”
President Marcos also noted that poor solid waste management was a “major factor” contributing to the flooding in Metro Manila during Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.
He urged LGUs, particularly those in urban areas, to improve waste management and disposal practices.
Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos supported the president’s appeal, stressing the importance of proper waste management.
“Ang sinasabi ng batas, bawat isang LGU may landfill. Hindi lahat may landfill. Tubig, sewage, very basic ‘yan eh,” Abalos said.
At the summit, LGUs were encouraged to adopt innovative technologies to fulfill their responsibilities to their communities.
The Marcos administration is advocating for the use of technology to enhance infrastructure development, urban planning, and streamline government processes.
The summit provided a platform for local leaders to collaborate and share best practices to strengthen local government systems and policies.
