NO LOCKDOWN SET FOR APRIL 10, SAYS DOH; CICADA COVID 19 VARIANT NOT A THREAT

Manila, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) says that no lockdown set for April 10 due to the so-called “Cicada virus,” or the BA.3.2 variant of COVID-19.

The claims of some social media platforms circulating online using the logo of DOH considered fake news and  not true.

They emphasized that these are fake and appear to be intentionally designed to scare the public.

In fact, the DOH reported that this year, only 350 COVID-19 cases have been recorded from January 4 to March 21, which is 60% lower compared to last year’s 865 cases.

Out of the total cases, none have been identified as BA.3.2, meaning that the so-called “Cicada variant” has not been detected in the Philippines.

Even if it were detected, authorities said there is no cause for concern, as it is not classified as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Cicada variant is also said to have symptoms similar to other COVID-19 variants.

Despite easing public fears, the DOH assured that they continue to monitor all possible COVID-19 variants, whether considered dangerous or not.

Aside from COVID-19, the health department is also closely monitoring other diseases that may affect the health of Filipinos.

Meanwhile, the agency reminded the public not to easily believe everything they see or read online to avoid becoming victims of fake news or misleading announcements.

They also advised against sharing such posts to prevent causing unnecessary fear, especially among the elderly.
