Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he will closely watch the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which will begin on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
“We are watching, of course,” President Marcos said in a short interview after the oath-taking ceremony of new Associate Justice Raul Villanueva at Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang.
Marcos defended Senate President Chiz Escudero’ move over the schedule of the impeachment trial.
He noted that Escudero is trying to make the process smooth and peaceful as Congress transitions from the 19th to the 20th Congress.
Earlier, the President explained that it is now the Senate’s job to handle the impeachment process.
“This is really a function of the Senate right now. So, we leave it to them,” he said.
It can be recalled that The impeachment case was already passed by the House of Representatives months ago and is now already at the hands of the Senate.
When asked about concerns regarding the transition between Congresses, President Marcos said “there is no problem.”
“Why? What is the controversy?” he said. “Even if they start the trial now, they will not finish it before the new Senators arrive. So again, it’s up to the Senate,” he added. — Freda Ordinado, Contributor
