‘PEACE CANNOT BE POSTPONED’: POPE LEO XIV ON SUFFERING IN UKRAINE

Vatican City — Pope Leo has renewed his appeal for peace in Ukraine, saying that it can no longer be postponed.

Speaking during yesterday’s Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff expressed deep sorrow over the continuing violence and humanitarian crisis there.

He said his heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, pointing to what he described as unspeakable suffering caused by the conflict.

He emphasized that peace is an urgent necessity that must move beyond words, calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The Pope’s appeal comes as fighting continues on the ground.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that in just one week, Russia launched more than 1,300 attack drones, over 1,400 guided aerial bombs, and 96 missiles of various types against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war have yet to yield progress.

Recent trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States in Geneva ended without a breakthrough.

The war began when Russia launched a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, seeking to seize parts of its territory in 2022.

As of today, Moscow still insists on Kyiv to withdraw some parts of its territory.

Meanwhile, in a post on X, Pope Leo urged the faithful around the world to continue praying for the people of Ukraine.
