PH CENTENNIAL TEAM CONTINUE TO STRIVE FOR AN OLYMPIC MEDAL

As of Wednesday afternoon, team Philippines is now already down to less than 15 out of 22 athletes with the chance of a medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics.

During the games scheduled on July 30, out of 4 games of Filipino athletes, only Tokyo 2021 boxing silver medalist Nesthy Petecio advanced to the next round, while the remaining fell out of the competition.

Petecio successfully defeated Iranian rival during the Tuesday games of women’s 57kg boxing tournament, with all five judges scoring in favor of the Philippines.

Petecio is set to compete in the round-of-16 on Saturday, and if succesful, the athlete will then advance to the quarterfinal games.

Aside from Petecio, other Filipino athletes scheduled on the same day fell out of the games.

First-ever Filipina rower in the Olympics, Joanie Delgaco, bid goodbyes to medal contention after falling last out of 6 athletes, during the quarterfinal games, and will be able to determine her final rank after the semifinals C/D.

Judo star player Kiyomi Watanabe also made an early exit after falling against Chinese counterpart during the round-of-32 in women’s judo 63kg division.

Watanabe unfortunately repeated an opening exit, similar to her Tokyo 2021 debut.

Meanwhile, swimmer Kayla Sanchez, on July 30, advanced to semifinals, but did not get the chance to compete in the finals after falling out of the competition in July 31 games.

Sanchez did not reached the top 8 cut off for finals after she finished 15th out of the 16 semifinalists with 54.21 seconds time.

Meanwhile, one of Philippines’ highest bid for a win Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial is also out of the competition.

Marcial ended round-of-16 men’s 80kg division match with Uzbekistan rival via unanimous decision, pushing Tokyo 2021 bronze medalist officially out of the games.

Meanwhile, two more boxing athletes of the Philippines is set to compete tonight, including Hergie Bacyadan and Carlo Paalam, opening their Olympic medal bet.

Gymnastics world champion Carlos Yulo is also scheduled to compete tonight for the final round of all-around event with the chance to bag the first Olympic medal of the Philippines from the Paris Games 2024.
