Manila, Philippines – The Philippine government has urged Filipinos living near the Thailand-Cambodia border to be vigilant amid the ongoing armed conflict.
According to the Philippine Embassy in Thailand, they assured immediate assistance to Filipinos there while continuing to monitor the situation at the borders.
The embassy’s advice includes following orders including evacuation orders from public safety, community officials and their employers.
Specifically, in the seven border provinces of Ubon Ratchatani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Buri Ram, Chantaburi, and Trat.
The Philippine embassy has also instructed Filipinos there to monitor the situation, while prohibiting any travel to the said provinces.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), there are an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 Filipinos based in Cambodia, 87 of whom are in the two border provinces.
Meanwhile, there are 38,509 Filipinos based in Thailand.
Of this number, 125 are in the seven border provinces.
Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia resumed on Monday, December 8, following five-day fiercest exchange of rockets and heavy artillery in July that killed 48 people and displaced more than 300,000 people.—Alvin Pelobello, Eurotv News
