PHILIPPINES LEAD AALCO AS NEW VP

Kampala, Uganda – During the 63rd Annual Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) this September 7 to 12 in Kampala, Uganda, the Philippines was elected as the Vice President represented by Marie Charlotte G. Tang, a Philippine non-resident Ambassador to Uganda based in Naroibi, Kenya.

AALCO was founded in 1956 in the spirit of the Bandung Conference headquartered in New Delhi. It is an intergovernmental platform for Asian and African states to consult and collaborate on international and legal issues.

In the Session, there were a total of 49 Member States from AALCO and Uganda’s Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka presided as President.

The Annual Session’s discussion focused on pressing issues of international law, including the environment and sustainable development, Law of the Sea, cyberspace, outer space, international trade and investment, and the safety of migrant workers.

As emphasized by Ambassador Tang, the Philippines is eager to deepen engagement with Africa, recognizing that Asia and Africa offer valuable insights that foster international legal dialogue and solutions.

She also mentioned that the Philippines was honored by the election since it reflects the trust of other AALCO members in the country’s commitment to multilateralism, rule of law, and South-South cooperation.  – Rose Anne C. Palma, EUROTV News Contributor
