PHL FOOTBALL TEAM STUNS TH IN ASEAN MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CUP SEMIFINALS

Manila, Philippines — In the leg 1 of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup semifinals, the Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) delivered a thrilling 2-1 victory over defending champions Thailand on Friday (December 27), putting them another step towards a finals appearance.

Playing before an electrified crowd at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the PHL team secured the win with a dramatic stoppage-time goal by Kike Linares, with a well-placed assist by Paul Tabinas off a Zico Bailey free kick.

Consequently, the home team drew first goal in the 21st minute as Sandro Reyes fired a brilliant left-footed strike.

Thailand, however, equalized before halftime, and both sides battled for dominance in the second half.

The moment came deep when Linares struck and sent Filipino fans into joyous celebration.

Despite Thailand’s late attempts, including a near-goal by captain Peeradon Chamratsamee, the Philippine defense stood firm.

This monumental victory is the Philippines’ first win against Thailand in 52 years, with their last triumph dating back in 1972.

The result also gives the team an edge heading into the second leg on December 30 in Bangkok, Thailand.
