Belgrade, Serbia — Tens of thousands of protesters staged a silent march in the Serbian capital on Monday (September 1, 2025) to honor 16 victims killed in a railway station roof collapse.
The march, organized at the invitation of high school pupils, began around early morning in front of the old railway station in Belgrade.
Sixteen students carried white roses through Savski Trg square as the names of the victims were read aloud.
Similar demonstrations were held in other Serbian cities, including Novi Sad, Kragujevac, and Aleksinac.
These demonstrations were sparked by the deaths of the said number of people last November, which many blame on corruption tied to the Novi Sad railway station renovation.
With this, they demanded snap elections to remove President Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling SNS party, which already took months.
They also continue to push for early elections as the only way to achieve political change.
While these protests had largely remained peaceful, violent clashes erupted last August 13, leaving dozens of police officers and civilians injured.—JC Pancho, Contributor
