QCDRRMO MARKS AREAS ALONG THE WEST VALLEY FAULT IN QC THROUGH “WALK THE FAULT” ACTIVITY

Quezon City, Philippines – As part of ongoing preparations for the threat of a major earthquake in Metro Manila, the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO) conducted a “Walk the Fault” activity to identify and mark areas in the city traversed by the West Valley Fault.

The West Valley Fault is considered a potential source of the so-called “The Big One”, a destructive earthquake that could reportedly reach a magnitude of 7.2.

To prepare for this possibility, engineers from the City Engineering Department and experts from the Department of Building Official joined QCDRRMO in inspecting roads and buildings that may be affected by the fault line.

Authorities installed markers in areas directly crossed by the fault to serve as warnings and guides for residents and local officials.

Among the barangays in Quezon City identified as being along the West Valley Fault are: Bagong Silangan, Batasan Hills, Matandang Balara, Pansol, Blue Ridge B, Libis, Bagumbayan, White Plains, and Ugong Norte.

The QCDRRMO continues to call on all residents, especially those living along the fault line, to participate in earthquake drills, create emergency plans, and stay prepared for the possibility of a major earthquake.
