Manila, Philippines — Figure skater Aleksandr Korovin is officially a Filipino citizen after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12115, granting him Philippine citizenship.
The announcement was made public through the Official Gazette on December 21.
Korovin, 30, was born in Russia but has been representing the Philippines since 2021 alongside his figure skating partner, Isabella Gamez.
Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) president Nikki Cheng expressed optimism about Korovin and his partner Isabella Gamez’ potential.
“We firmly believe that this talented duo has the potential to bring home the Philippines’ first-ever medal in the Asian Winter Games,” Cheng stated.
Korovin and Gamez recently showcased their skills at the 2024 International Skating Union (ISU) Cup of China, finishing seventh among eight pairs.
Korovin naturalization solidifies his eligibility to compete in the upcoming Asian Winter Games in February next year.
