The FBI is investigating a shooting that occurred at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday as an assassination attempt against the former president and current Republican presidential candidate.
According to law enforcement officials, the shooting took place as Trump was addressing the crowd at the rally. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, and Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents.
“The FBI confirm an ‘assassination attempt’ took place during the rally,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement, adding that he is “fine” and being assessed at a medical facility.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek described the shooting as an assassination attempt in a news briefing, stating that the bureau is not yet ready to identify the suspect or provide details on the motive.
However, media reports have identified the slain suspect as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man. The suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement at the scene.
The shooting comes as Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, are both scheduled to campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend. First Lady Jill Biden is also expected to participate in campaigning efforts in Pittsburgh.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of political events, particularly in the context of the highly polarized 2024 election cycle. It has also drawn attention to the ongoing debate over gun violence and the need for effective measures to protect public figures and citizens alike.
As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that they are working diligently to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and to ensure the safety of all involved.
