PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Spirit Airlines flight NK951 was struck by gunfire over Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday, November 11, leading to flight cancellations at the country’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP/MTPP).
The shooting is believed to be part of ongoing “gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince,” which have included armed violence and disruptions to roads, airports, and seaports U.S. embassy called.
The attack, which occurred just before the plane from Fort Lauderdale, Florida was about to land to Port-Au-Prince, led in a flight attendant sustaining minor injuries.
The plane was then diverted to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where it was inspected and confirmed to have sustained damage consistent with gunfire.
The Haitian civil aviation authority has temporarily suspended all flights to the country’s PAP/MTPP airport until November 18, while Spirit Airlines has also halted flights to Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien.
Meanwhile, JetBlue and American Airlines were also suspending flights to and from Haiti.
