Athens, Greece — A massive wildfire that is developing north of Athens is forcing thousands of people to flee their homes as flames are soaring up to 25 meters.

500 firefighters, 150 vehicles, and several volunteers fought the spread of the fire in Athens, Greece, where fifteen fire fighting planes and nine helicopters were also operating since the fire broke out.

The wildfire quickly spread into Lake Marathon, a property where Athens supplies water, according to the spokesperson for the city’s fire department.

The fire brigade also reported that homes and other properties were on fire in the neighboring town of Varnavas.

There, firefighters reportedly rescued individuals who were engulfed in flames from a convoy of twenty to twenty-five automobiles that had been attempting to flee the region.
