Manila Philippines — Former Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV strongly opposes the plans of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Davao City Congressman Paolo Duterte, and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte following statements from Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a press conference, the former Senator emphasized his belief that the family’s candidacy could be detrimental, especially since Vice President Sara and the former President do not deny their pro-China stance during their administration’s six-year tenure.
During Duterte’s presidency, Chinese ventures such as Philippine Offshare Gaming Operations, China Telco, and alleged illegal drug issues flourished.
According to Trillanes, all these were facilitated through Duterte’s collaboration with the Chinese.
Trillanes also mentioned that in his view, the Duterte family’s track record is insufficient to address the country’s needs, particularly concerning poverty.
Despite the Duterte family’s plans, Trillanes remains certain that they will not contribute positively in the Senate due to issues of transparency and genuine government reform, as per his statements.
Meanwhile, Vice President Sara assures the public of her family’s determination to serve at a higher level of governance.
However, Trillanes believes this assurance is insufficient to dispel societal doubts and concerns regarding their 2025 plans.
Trillanes is now urging progressive forces, including former members of the Liberal Party, to unite in preventing the Duterte family’s entry into the Senate.
He confirmed that they are advocating for figures like Bam Aquino, Kiko Pangilinan, and Atty. Chel Diokno to potentially run for senator in the upcoming elections.
