TRUMP IMPOSES 50% TARIFF ON BRAZIL AMID BOLSONARO TRIAL DISPUTE; PH HIT BY 20%

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new tariff measures targeting several countries, with Brazil facing the harshest penalties.

Effective August 1, the United States will impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, a move Trump links to what he calls a political “witch hunt” against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Trump is also demanding that the trial against Bolsonaro be ended, accusing Brazil’s leadership of weaponizing the judiciary against a political opponent.

The Philippines is among seven smaller trading partners affected by the new policy, facing a 20% duty, up from the previous 17%.

Other nations impacted include Iraq, Brunei, and Sri Lanka.

In response, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned of reciprocal measures and defended the trial, saying it reflects the country’s commitment to justice “not political persecution”.

The announcement has already shaken markets, with Brazil’s assets plunging and regional trade partners voicing concern.

The tariffs are part of Trump’s broader push to renegotiate trade deals and punish what he calls “unfair practices.” —Isa Estrellado, Contributor
