United States – Nearly a year into his US presidency, Donald Trump seems to continue to revisit his loss in the 2020 US presidential elections.
Over the weekend, he announced plans for a new executive order that would mandate voter identification for every voter, and further restrict mail-in ballots over fraud concerns.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump declared that there should be no exceptions to the voter ID requirement.
Currently, voter identification laws vary by state, ranging from photo identification to broader exceptions to specific individuals.
Meanwhile, according to Time, only 36 states require some form of ID at the polls.
The order, according to Trump, will also restrict mail-in ballots, allowing only for members of the military away from their homes and for individuals who are seriously ill.
This announcement builds on Trump’s long-standing claims, without concrete evidence, that widespread voter fraud cost him the 2020 presidential election.
It can be recalled that for years, Trump has called for sweeping changes to the US electoral process, including the elimination of electronic voting machines because of his concern.
Trump thus pushed for the return of paper ballots and manual vote counting.
But US election officials warn that such methods are time-consuming, more expensive, and less accurate.
Meanwhile, the US constitution stated that it only grants authority over elections with this matter mainly to US states and Congress, not by the President.
Earlier this month, Trump also pledged to sign another order before the 2026 midterms to end the use of both mail-in ballots and electronic voting machines altogether.
