US GOV’T ALLOTS P13.8-M SHELTER ASSISTANCE FOR FLOODED-HIT FILIPINOS

Manila, Philippines – Everytime a calamity, like typhoon and floodings, hit the Philippines, among the challenges faced by many Filipinos is how they would return back to their homes, which may be damaged during the disaster.

As of August 8, 2025, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 7,665 families that remain at evacuation centers due to the heavy floodings brought by the combined effects of Habagat, and three tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong.

There have also been a total of 88,492 damaged or destroyed houses, amounting to P6,256,375 worth of damages overall.

Given the situation, the United States government provided $250,000 which is about P13.8 million funding for shelter and housing assistance to Filipino families who lost their homes amid the calamity.

The US Embassy in Manila noted that this allocation will be used to fund emergency shelter assistance and provide hygiene kits for over 17,000 individuals to are still at evacuation centers.

Through this funding, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will deliver shelter-grade tarpaulins, shelter repair kits, and household supplies for families whose houses were damaged.

Each repair kit contains basic construction tools and materials that will help them rebuild and reconstruct their houses.

Aside from these, families still in evacuation centers will be receiving hygiene kits to ensure their health and sanitation.

This is the second tranche of US funding for disaster response in the Philippines after the previous P13.8 million used to deliver 47,700 DSWD food packs benefitting over 200,000 individuals in the Northern and Central Luzon.—Mia Layaguin, Eurotv News
