WR NUMERO POLL: MAJORITY OF FILIPINOS SAY FPRRD SHOULD STAND ICC TRIAL, HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR DRUG WAR KILLINGS

Manila, Philippines — Amidst the ongoing investigation and trial against former President Rodrigo Duterte related to the alleged extra judicial killings under his administration’s war on drugs campaign, majority of Filipinos believe that he should be tried in a trial.

Based on the results of the study conducted by WR Numero Research regarding the ICC investigation on the case and Duterte’s accountability over the allegations, over half of Filipinos agree that Duterte should stand trial for the allegations.

“We asked whether the President should stand trial, whether it is legitimate that he is tried for the accusations against him. Overwhelming majority, 52% agree that the President should stand trial in the ICC,” the report noted.

On the premise of whether Duterte should personally face the trial set in ICC, 62% agreed that he should do so.

61% also acknowledged the role of ICC and its significance in unfolding the truth behind the alleged violations committed under the war on drugs campaign.

Similarly, 66% believes that ICC will be fair with Duterte’s trial and the investigation.

WR Numero Research also seeks the views and perceptions of Filipinos regarding the war on drugs campaign, which was the center of Duterte’s ICC trial.

Based on the results of the research, the majority of Filipinos also believes that Duterte should be held accountable with the alleged extra judicial killings regarding the war on drugs.
“If in case Filipinos believe that the drug war is a harm or is a problem, the next step is who do you ascribe that harm to—sino yung may pananagutan doon sa masamang nangyari. 54% of Filipinos believe that Duterte should be held accountable for the EJKs in the drug war,” it added.
