Manila, Philippines – On March 14, Saturday, has been declared a Special Non-Working Holiday in the 2nd Legislative District of Antipolo City by Malacañang Palace to accommodate a special election.
The declaration is in accordance with Proclamation No. 1173, which upholds the right of Filipinos to vote in the country’s elections.
The special election was prompted by the vacancy left by Representative Romeo Acop, who passed away in December last year.
Under Republic Act 6645, as amended by RA 7166, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is required to hold a special election if a position in the House of Representatives becomes permanently vacant and there is at least one year remaining before the expiration of the term.
Meanwhile, around 300,000 voters from eight barangays are expected to cast their votes in the March 13 special election.
Six candidates will oppose for the post after Lorenzo Sumulong decided to withdraw his candidacy.
Among the candidates in Antipolo’s second district is Philip Acop, the son of the late congressman.
