Baguio City, Philippines — Days of nonstop rain brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon, or Habagat, have triggered flooding and landslides in several parts of the country.
One of the hardest-hit areas was in Baguio City.
On Sunday night, August 9 a landslide occurred at Purok 2 in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio where three houses were buried.
According to the local government unit, 13 individuals were also trapped there.
And after over two days of rescue operations, Baguio City Public Information Office said that all 13 people missing in the landslide were all accounted for this Tuesday morning.
Amongst them, three people survived, including a 77-year-old pastor, a 27-year-old man, and a 27-year-old woman.
They were already brought to a hospital for medical observation.
Unfortunately, ten others were confirmed dead, including several children. The youngest was a two year old child.
In his Facebook post, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
He then thanked rescue teams, volunteers, and partner agencies who worked through difficult conditions.
He also said the city would continue assisting affected residents and families across the city.
According to the available data shared by Baguio City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, at least 184 families in Baguio have been affected by the extreme weather conditions.
