DEPED EYES FLEXIBLE LEARNING OPTIONS AMID POST-SUPER EL NIÑO HEAT

Manila, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) is also preparing for the possible effects of extreme heat in the coming months through 2027 due to the Super El Niño phenomenon.

According to the department, it has already updated its contingency plan and revised guidelines on learning continuity during emergencies to protect students and school personnel from the effects of El Niño.

These measures include allowing schools to shift from face-to-face classes to alternative learning arrangements and adjusting class schedules during periods of extreme heat or high heat index, especially since not all schools are air-conditioned, have adequate ventilation, or have proper facilities to protect students from the heat.

Part of the measures is ensuring heat and water security in schools by establishing water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities with access to clean water.

DepEd is also focusing on real-time monitoring of the heat index, water supply, and other factors related to drought so that assistance and support can be provided by the agency when needed.

Meanwhile, the Education Department will also implement the basic education curriculum, which will include lessons for Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 10 learners on the effects of climate change and the measures that should be taken to address them.

The agency will also strengthen the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O), through which students will participate in waste segregation and garbage-cleanup activities.
