Manila, Philippines — The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition challenging the legality of the June 3 session of the senate resulting to the overturn of the Senate leadership.
SC en banc on a resolution dated August 26 dismissed the petition for certiorari filed by Atty. Valeriano Loon and Atty. Zigfred Diaz questioning the constitutionality of the said senate session.
On June 3, 2026, the then minority bloc declared a quorum following the appearance of senator Chiz Escudero as the 12th member.
This comes after the 3-day boycott of the then majority bloc led by then Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano as a sign of protest on Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s arrest.
Cayetano bloc likewose filed a petition before the SC challenging the validity of the proceedings.
The High court noted that the petitioners failed to prove that there was a grave abuse of discretion on the 12 members of the senate that declared the quorum.
SC also found that the quorum and proceedings are legal and in accord with the law.
Following this, Gatchalian hailed the decision, maintaining that the proceedings were aligned with the rules established by the Senate as an institution.–Mia Layaguin, Eurotv News
