Six Dead, Thousands Displaced as Monsoon and Twin Storms Batter Philippines

Six people have been reported dead due to the combined impacts of the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) and tropical cyclones Ferdie and Gener, according to the latest situation report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday.

The fatalities, still pending validation by the NDRRMC, were from Mindanao. Four deaths occurred in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), while two were reported in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

In addition to the fatalities, eleven individuals sustained injuries, and two remain missing as a result of the storms.

Since monitoring began last Wednesday, the NDRRMC has recorded several flooding incidents, predominantly in MIMAROPA, Central Visayas, Zamboanga, and BARMM.

The agency reported that more than 86,000 families, or around 337,506 people, have been affected, with over 9,600 families currently housed in evacuation centers.

MIMAROPA recorded the highest number of infrastructure damages with 14 cases, contributing to an estimated nationwide total of P200,000 in damages.

Furthermore, over 200 homes have been damaged, with more than 120 of these cases reported in Western Visayas.

Tropical cyclone Ferdie left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday, while tropical depression Gener formed from a low-pressure area early Monday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast that the habagat and Gener will continue to bring moderate to heavy rains across parts of Luzon and Visayas, including areas already dealing with flooding.

Meanwhile, another tropical storm, internationally named Pulasan, is expected to enter PAR by Tuesday evening.
