Manila Philippines — The Supreme Court asked the Philippine Congress to comment and address within 10 days the petition filed by Vice President Sara Duterte seeking the dismissal of her impeachment.
During the High Court’s session on Tuesday, February 25, SC ordered the House of Representatives, House Secretary general Reginald Velasco, and the Senate of the Philippines to respond and comment on the Vice President’s petition filed last week.
Duterte’s petition involves a petition for certiorari and prohibition, as well as a temporary restraining order asking the High Court to nullify and void the impeachment complaint filed against her.
In her petition, Duterte cited that the fourth impeachment complaint violates the one year bar impeachment rule as stated in the 1987 Philippine Constitution.
The respondents have 10 non-extendible days from notice to comment on the matter, as ordered by the supreme Court.
SC ISSUES SHOW CAUSE ORDER VS. FRANCIS LEO MARCOS
Meanwhile, during the same en banc session on Tuesday, the High Court demanded Francis Leo Marcos for an explanation following his candidacy withdrawal.
In the decision, SC asks Marcos as to why he should not be cited in contempt following his disrespect of the High court’s decision and processes.
This came after Marcos withdrew his senatorial candidacy after appealing to the SC and granted with a temporary restraining order, holding back the Commission on Elections from declaring him as a nuisance candidate in the 2025 elections.
The high court said that his actions tend to bring the SC’s processes into disrepute or disrespect.
Marcos has 72 hours from notice to show cause, as ordered by the High Court.
