DMW: 13 FILIPINO CREWS, SAFE FROM HOUTHI’S ATTACK

Manila Philippines — The Filipino crew members of the M/V Laax – a cargo vessel that was attacked by the Houthi rebel group in the Red Sea – are safe, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed, Wednesday.

Thirteen Filipinos and one Ukrainian seaman were on board of the cargo vessel when the attack happened.

The Local Manning Agency (LMA) informed the DMW that the said vessel sustained damages from four missiles launched by the Houthi rebels while the cargo vessel was cruising the Yemeni Coast near Hodeida, yesterday.

“The DMW was informed by the shipping company’s local manning agency (LMA) that the vessel, a bulk carrier, sustained some damage from four missiles launched by Houthi rebels as the ship was traversing the Yemeni coast near Hodeidah late yesterday afternoon (Manila time) ,” according to a DMW statement.

The M/V Laax is said to be proceeding to its next port of call.

The DMW also continues to communicate with the shipping and manning agencies to monitor the safety and condition of the Filipino crew members.

The manning agencies have also informed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) regarding the attacked. 

According to the United States (US) military, the Houthi rebels released five missiles, but only four hit the cargo vessel.

Last month, the DMW banned the deployment of crew members to any type of vessels traversing through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, which has also been the subject of attacks by rebel groups.
